Dryland Training

Build strength, confidence, and technique out of the water. Our dryland training is a key part of every diver’s development at Canterbury Diving.

What is dryland training?

Dryland training takes place outside the pool and focuses on the core skills that underpin diving performance. It allows divers to safely learn and refine movements before taking them into the water.
Sessions are held in our dedicated dryland facility at Parakiore and are tailored to suit different ages and levels.

Why dryland training is important

Dryland training plays a crucial role in helping divers progress safely and effectively.

Through dryland, divers develop:
  • Strength and body control
  • Flexibility and mobility
  • Spatial awareness and coordination
  • Confidence in new skills before performing them in the pool

It also helps reduce the risk of injury by building strong foundations and correct technique.

What to expect in a session

Dryland sessions are structured, active, and designed to be both challenging and fun.

Depending on the level, sessions may include:
  • Trampoline work to practise take-offs and somersaults
  • Harness training to safely learn new dives
  • Strength and conditioning exercises
  • Flexibility and mobility work
  • Technique drills and progressions

Our coaches guide each diver based on their stage, ensuring a safe and supportive environment.

Who is dryland for?

Dryland is an important part of training for all divers, from beginners through to competitive and performance pathways.
  • Recreational divers helps build confidence and learn foundational skills (dryland sessions only available on pool exclusion days or during holiday training)
  • Competitive divers use dryland to refine technique and progress more quickly
  • Performance divers rely on dryland for advanced skill development and conditioning

What to wear and bring

To get the most out of each session, we recommend:
  • Comfortable athletic clothing suitable for physical activity
  • Bare feet or socks (depending on the activity)
  • A water bottle

Please avoid clothing with zips or hard objects that could interfere with equipment.

Where and when

Dryland sessions take place at our dryland facility at Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre. Head up to level 3, and at the top of the main stairs, take the smaller set of stairs on your left to access the dry diving area.

Some programmes include dedicated dryland sessions, while others incorporate dryland as part of their overall training schedule.

Please refer to your programme schedule for specific session times.
