Squads in this pathway

The performance pathway includes the following squads:

• Talent ID Squad
• Development Squad (Junior & Senior)
• Performance Squad

The Performance Pathway is a selective programme for a small number of divers identified by the Head Coach as having the potential to pursue long-term high-performance diving.
It is designed to prepare athletes for World Aquatics Junior Elite and Open pathways through advanced coaching, increased training commitment and individualised development.

How are divers selected?
Entry into the Performance Pathway is by invitation only.
Selection is made solely by the Head Coach and is based on a range of factors including:

• long-term athletic potential
• physical attributes
• technical development
• coachability
• attitude and commitment
• readiness for the increased demands of the programme

Selection is reviewed over time. As young athletes develop at different rates, divers may move into or out of the Performance Pathway as their development evolves.

Talent ID Class

​Being identified through Talent ID does not guarantee future selection into the Performance Pathway. As divers develop, coaches continually assess which pathway will best support each athlete's long-term development.

• Divers aged 5+ identified with strong potential
• Entry into the performance pathway

• Ongoing assessment (not a one-off trial)

  • Physical ability
  • Coordination
  • Coachability
  • Skill development
• Designed to place each diver in the right pathway

Development Squad

The Development Squad forms part of Canterbury Diving's Performance Pathway. Divers are invited into this squad when the Head Coach believes they have the potential, attitude and commitment to pursue long-term high-performance diving.
The Development Squad is designed to prepare athletes for World Aquatics Junior Elite and Open pathways through increased technical, physical and psychological development.

Who it's for​

• Divers selected into the performance pathway
• Athletes showing strong potential for higher-level competition

What to expect
Training focus

• Advanced technical development
• Higher difficulty dives
• Stronger performance expectations

Commitment

• 3–4 sessions per week
• Domestic competitions expected

Competition pathway

• Advanced Age Group competitions
• National-level events

Progression
​The Head Coach regularly reviews each diver's development and recommends the squad that best supports their current stage of development. Placement is based on a range of factors, including technical ability, physical development, attitude, commitment, coachability and long-term potential.
Some divers may progress to the Performance Squad, while others may move between the Development, Age Group and Skills Squads as their needs change. These movements are a normal part of our athlete development pathway and are not considered a promotion or demotion. Our priority is ensuring every diver trains in the environment where they can continue to develop and thrive.
